International co-operation of the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia and co-operation within the European Statistical System

As a member of the European Statistical System, the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia actively co-operates in working groups and committees of Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities, and in technical and infrastructural projects which are co-ordinated by Eurostat and which provide support for the implementation of high-quality statistical surveys, harmonisation of statistics and promotion of official statistical data. The Statistical Office co-operates in all phases of preparing, harmonising and adopting European statistical legislation.

The Statistical Office is an active member of the Conference of European Statisticians (CES), which operates within the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), and the CES Bureau; in June 2009 Ms Irena Križman, Director-General of the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia (SORS), was elected for the third time CES Bureau Vice-Chairperson for the 2009-2011 period. Participation of SORS’s statisticians in working bodies of the CES for various fields of statistics contributes to the development of the Slovene national statistics and represents a contribution to the exchange of good practice with other statistical institutions. The Statistical Office also takes part in the activities of the United Nations Statistical Commission.

The Statistical Office co-operates with the OECD, where - due to active co-operation in various international statistical institutions and some joint Eurostat/OECD projects from the field of statistics as well as good methodological harmonisation with international statistical standards - in July 2006 Slovenia obtained the status of a permanent observer in the OECD Committee on Statistics, which was in 2007 followed by the invitation to start membership negotiations.

The Statistical Office has established a good co-operation with other national statistical institutes and, on the basis of memorandums on statistical co-operation, it offers help in the field of statistics within twinnings and other international projects.

The Statistical Office co-operates with international scientific associations in the field of statistics, among them the International Statistical Institute (ISI) and its section the International Association for Official Statistics (IAOS). Ms Irena Križman, Director-General of the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia, was elected President of the IAOS Executive Committee for the 209-2011 period.
