Exceptional output of stubble cereals and maize for grain
According to statistical data, in 2014 farmers in Slovenia produced more stubble cereals than in the previous year, which is due to both larger area sown and good yield per hectare. With 173,000 tons, total output of wheat and spelt, which is the main bread cereal in the country, increased by a quarter, while average yield of 5.2 tons per hectare was 18% better than in the previous year. On a tenth larger area than a year before almost 7,000 tons of rye, the second most important bread cereal in the country, was produced, which is 34% more than in the previous year and more than twice as much (120%) as the last ten-year average. Fodder cereals also did well; average yields per hectare of barley (4.9 tons), triticale (4.7 tons) and oats (3.3 tons) were the best ever. As regards the quantity, the outputs of barley (90,000 tons) and triticale (20,000 tons) were the largest in the past twenty years.
Despite maize for grain being sown on 8% smaller area than in the previous year, total output in 2014 (351,000 tons) was 55% larger than in 2013, mostly due to favourable weather conditions. Average yield was exceptional; 9.1 tons per hectare was a fifth better than the last ten-year average and the best ever.
As regards dried pulses, drybeans did the best
Wet weather during the summer of 2014 had a positive impact on drybeans. On about the same area as in the previous year, which was not very good for dry bean production, more than twice as much was produced (115%). Total output of fodder peas was 30% larger than in the previous year.
Very good potato yield
Potato output in 2014 was 97,000 tons, which is compared to a very meagre output a year before 56% more. Average yield was 27 per hectare, which is the best yield in the past twenty years and 17% better than the last ten-year average.
Better yield of industrial plants than in the previous year
Among oil plants, which are the prevailing industrial plants in Slovenia, oil turniprape did well in 2014. Total output was 20,000 tons, which is almost a third (31.6%) more than in the previous, also very favourable year. Average yield of 3.6 tons per hectare was the best ever. Output of pumpkins for oil was 43% better than in the previous, very unfavourable year. Average yield of 0.6 ton per hectare was the same as the last ten-year average, which shows that 2014 was an average year as regards the production of this oil plant. The area of soya has been increasing in recent years; in 2014 it was 46% larger than a year earlier, while the output was 126% larger. Average yield of hops was 1.8 tons per hectare and thus a quarwter better than the last ten-year average, which indicates an exceptional year for hop production.
In 2014, a lot of green fodder from arable land and from permanent grassland
Total output of green fodder from arable land was more than half (53%) larger than in the drought stricken 2013. The reason was good yield of both silage maize and of grasses and clover. Average yield of silage maize was 48.0 tons per hectare and thus the best in the past twenty years. Total output of clover and lucerne was 39,000 tons and almost a third (31%) larger than a year earlier and 41% larger than the last ten-year average. Larger than the previous one (by 35%) was also the total output of grasses and grass-clover mixtures. Average yield on permanent grassland (5.7 tons per hectare) was almost a tenth (by 9.4%) larger than average yield on permanent grassland in the last ten-year period.
Total output of vegetables slightly larger
In 2014, around 71,000 tons of vegetables were produced in Slovenia, of which more than half (59%) for sale. Total output of vegetables, i.e. market and non-market, was 14.4% larger than in the previous year. As regards individual vegetables, total output of all vegetables, except tomato (which was 4% smaller), was larger than in the previous year. The output of peas increased by 60%, of green beans by 39%, of beetroot by 32%, of rampion by 30% and of cucumber by 27%.
Fruit output about the same as in the previous year, output of olives smaller
In 2014, about the same quantity of fruit as in the previous year was produced in orchard plantations. All three early fruit species – cherries, sour cherries and apricots – did better than in 2013; the output of cherries was 10% larger and of apricots almost 100% larger. Of late fruit species, apples did slightly better (by 2%), while total output of pears was almost a third larger (by 31%). Of fruit species in orchard plantations, peaches and nectarines did worse than a year earlier; total output was more than a quarter (by 27%) smaller. The output of walnuts decreased by a quarter. Average yield of strawberries was 18.4 tons per hectare, which is a 9% decrease over the previous year. Average yields of individual fruit species show that 2014 was an average year for fruit production. Average yield of apples (27.9 tons per hectare) was the same as the last ten-year average. On the other hand, average yield of pears (17 tons per hectare) was 4% better than the last ten-year average.
Olive producers harvested almost a half (45%) less than in 2013. Average yield of 0.8 tons per hectare was only half the average yield in the previous year and 62% smaller than the last ten-year average.
Except apples and apricots, output of fruit species in extensive orchards was smaller than in the previous year.
Winegrowers produced less grapes
According to final data, in 2014 total grape output was 6% smaller than in the previous year and more than a tenth (14%) smaller than the last ten-year average.
