After several years of decline, government budget allocations for R&D slightly increased
Data show that after several years of decline, government budget allocations for R&D in absolute terms slightly increased compared to the previous year. According to the final budget 2016, government budget allocations for R&D (GBARD) in Slovenia amounted to EUR 162.8 million; this is EUR 2.9 million (or 1.8%) more than in the previous year, when the amount was EUR 159.8 million. If government budget allocations are expressed as a share of GDP, in 2016 this share was 0.40% of Slovenia’s GDP1, which is 0.01 of a percentage point less than in the previous year.

Most of the GBARD was spent in the government sector and the higher education sector
The structure of GBARD by sector of performance shows that most of the GBARD (91%) was spent in the government and higher education sectors, followed by the business enterprise sector (8%) and the private non-profit sector and abroad (1%).

General progress of knowledge an important socioeconomic objective
The structure of GBARD by socioeconomic objectives shows that in 2016 “General progress of knowledge” accounted for the largest share of total GBARD (56%)2 and that “Industrial production and technology” and “Health” were also important socioeconomic objectives for Slovenia. The same is true of planned budget allocations for R&D for 2017.

The planned budget allocations for R&D for 2017 amount to EUR 172.3 million
In the current year GBARD should be higher according to the provisional budget for 2017. The provisional government budget appropriations or outlays on R&D in 2017 amount to EUR 172.3 million, which means that the government plans to spend EUR 9.5 million more funds on R&D than in 2016.

1) GBARD as percentage of GDP is calculated on the basis of the latest available values of GDP.
2) Included also part of GBARD that was not classified by socio-economic objectives.
