In May 2017 more meat gained in Slovene slaughterhouses than a month before

In May 2017 about 3,337,000 poultry, about 22,000 pigs and about 10,000 cattle were slaughtered in Slovene slaughterhouses.

In May 2017 more animals slaughtered than in the previous month
Compared to the previous month, the number of sheep slaughtered in Slovene slaughterhouses was lower by about 52% (i.e. about 1,000 animals) and of horses by about 17% (i.e. about 20 animals). On the other hand, the slaughter of pigs went up by about 13% (i.e. about 3,000 animals), of poultry by about 5% (i.e. about 166,000 animals) and of cattle by about 2% (i.e. about 200 animals).

The total carcass weight more or less followed the trends in the number of slaughtered animals. The total carcass weight of slaughtered pigs increased by about 13% (weight difference of about 226,000 kg), of poultry by about 4% (weight difference of about 245,000 kg) and of cattle by about 2% (weight difference of about 61,000 kg). On the other hand, in the same comparison the weight of slaughtered sheep went down by about 42% (weight difference of about 9,000 kg) and of horses by about 21% (weight difference of about 4,000 kg).

In May 2017 more animals slaughtered than in May 2016
Compared to May 2016, the number of sheep slaughtered in Slovene slaughterhouses in May 2017 was higher by about 23%, of poultry by about 6%, of cattle by about 5% and of pigs by about 1%. In the same comparison a decrease was recorded in the number of slaughtered horses by about 15%.

Compared to May 2016, the total weight of dressed carcasses of sheep slaughtered in May 2017 increased by about 17%, of poultry by about 5% and of cattle and pigs by about 3% each. In the same comparison the total weight of dressed carcasses of slaughtered horses went down by about 24%.


In May 2017 we recorded slaughter of 3 cattle imported from Italy; their total weight of dressed carcasses was about 1 ton. In addition, we recorded slaughter of 376 pigs imported from Austria and Croatia; their total carcass weight was about 35 tons. There was no record of slaughter of imported poultry.
