Births peak in the summer, deaths in the winter
Over the year more births occur in the summer months, while more people die in the winter. In 2016, 20,345 children were born in Slovenia, most of them in the third quarter (5,612). Among 19,689 deaths in 2016, most people died in the first quarter (5,518) and the fewest in the third quarter (4,523).
Consequently, natural increase was the highest in the third quarter: 1,089 more people were born than died (2.1 per 1,000 population). In the first quarter of 2016 natural increase was most markedly negative (–603).
Most weddings in spring-summer months
6,667 couples married in 2016 or 3.4% more than in 2015. In 2016 most people married in June (more than 1,000), followed by September, May and July (more than 900 per month) and the fewest in February (203).
2,531 couples divorced in 2016 or 4.1% more than in 2015. Most divorces were recorded in the fourth quarter (686).
Net migration negative at the start of the year, later positive
Net migration negative only in the first quarter, when 214 fewer residents immigrated to Slovenia than emigrated from it. In the third quarter net migration was most markedly positive: 549 more residents immigrated to Slovenia than emigrated from it.
Most, 28%, internal migrations, i.e. changes of settlement of residence within Slovenia, were recorded in the third quarter of 2016. In total, 1.4% fewer internal migrations were recorded in 2016 than in 2015.
