The price level for consumer goods and services in Slovenia in 2016 at 82% of the EU-28 average level

In 2016 the prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages, clothes and consumer electronics in Slovenia were almost at the EU-28 average level, while the prices of restaurant and hotels services were 18% lower than the EU-28 average.

Eurostat published the results of the comparison of the price levels for consumer goods and services for 37 European countries.

Price levels for Slovenia for consumer goods and services lower than the average level in the EU-28

Price comparison among European countries shows that price level indices for consumer goods and services consumed by households in 2016 in Slovenia amounted to 82% of the EU-28 average.

Price levels differed widely across observed European countries in 2016. The highest price level was recorded in Switzerland (61% above the EU-28 average) and the lowest in Macedonia (54% below the EU-28 average). Among the EU-28 Member States Denmark (39% above the EU-28 average) had the highest price level, followed by Ireland (25% above the EU-28 average). The lowest price level was recorded in Bulgaria (52% below the EU-28 average).

The prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages, clothes and consumer electronics in Slovenia were almost the same as the EU-28 average level, while price levels for groups “alcoholic beverages and tobacco” and “restaurants and hotels” were lower than the EU-28 average by 19% and 18%, respectively.


Neighbouring country comparison of the price levels for groups of consumer goods and services 

A neighbouring country comparison of the price levels in groups of consumer goods and services shows that prices in Hungary and Croatia were on average lower than in Slovenia (by 27% and 20%, respectively), while price levels in Austria and Italy were on average higher than in Slovenia (by 30% and 24%, respectively).

The difference in price levels between the neighbouring countries was among the observed groups of consumer goods and services most significant in the group "restaurants and hotels". The price level of these services in Austria and Italy was higher than in Slovenia by about 26%, while in Croatia and Hungary it was lower by about 13% and  27%, respectively. The price level in the group of "clothing" and "consumer electronics" in Slovenia was almost similar to price levels in Italy, Austria and Croatia.
