Every fifth resident of municipalities Gorenja vas – Poljane and Komenda under 15 on 1 January 2017

On 1 January 2017 the four largest municipalities population-wise had a combined population of more than 500,000. The two smallest municipalities (Hodoš, Osilnica) had fewer than 400 residents each. On average the oldest population lived in municipality Kostel (50.0 years).

Many small and few large municipalities

On 1 January 2017 nearly 25% of Slovenia’s population lived in one of the four municipalities with 50,000 or more residents (Ljubljana, Maribor, Kranj and Koper). 

In Ljubljana, the largest municipality population-wise, the population increased by 600 (0.2%) in 2016 and reached nearly 289,000. The population increased in 104 other municipalities, the most in municipality Zavrč (by 5.6%).

On the other hand, 15% of Slovenia's population lived in the 110 municipalities with fewer than 5,000 residents. Two municipalities had fewer than 400 residents: Hodoš 375, and Osilnica 377.

The youngest population on average lived in municipality Komenda (37.9 years), while residents of municipality Kostel were on average the oldest (50.0 years).

The largest share of children (aged 0-14 years) among population was in municipalities Gorenja vas Poljane (21.1%) and Komenda (21.0%). The share of children increased the most in municipality Borovnica, namely by 0.7 of a percentage point (to 17.6%). The largest share of population aged 80 or more years was in municipality Osilnica (8.8%).

The most women in relation to men lived in municipality Murska Sobota (111 women per 100 men), while the fewest women lived in municipality Zavrč (61 women per 100 men).

New in the SI-STAT database

The SI−STAT database contains the series of data on total population of Slovenia and population groups. The data series is completed with data as of 1 January 2017. In most of the tables the data are published for two dates; as of 1 January and 1 July. Data are published by municipalities, administrative units, statistical regions, cohesion regions and Slovenia.
