In April 2017 consumers more optimistic

In April 2017 the consumer confidence indicator improved by 4 percentage points at the monthly level and by 12 percentage points at the annual level. It was 9 percentage points above last year’s average.

Consumers more optimistic than in the previous month

In April 2017 the value of the consumer confidence indicator increased by 4 percentage points (p.p.) at the monthly level.

All four component indicators improved at the monthly level. Saving expectations improved by 5 p.p., expectations about the unemployment level by 4 p.p., expectations about households’ finances by 3 p.p. and expectations about country’s economy by 2 p.p.

All other indicators also improved at the monthly level, except the expectations about major purchases which decreased by 3 p.p. Opinion about the possibility for saving at the present improved by 9 p.p., opinion about price levels in the last 12 months by 6 p.p., opinion about the current household’s financial situation by 5 p.p. and the already mentioned saving expectations also by 5 p.p.

The consumer confidence indicator higher at the annual level

The value of the consumer confidence indicator improved by 12 p.p. compared to April 2016, and it was 9 p.p. above last year’s average.

All four component indicators had a positive impact on the annual change of the confidence indicator. Expectations about the unemployment level improved by 18 p.p., about country’s economy by 14 p.p., about saving by 10 p.p. and about households’ finances by 6 p.p.

Quarterly indicators

Indicators measured quarterly remained almost the same as in the previous quarter, while compared to the same quarter last year the expectations about car purchase and home improvement improved (by 5 p.p. each).

In April 2017, 11% of Slovenes were considering a car purchase, 19% were considering home improvement and 3% were considering home purchase.

Methodological changes in 2016
A combined method of data collection was implemented in January 2016, namely a combination of an online questionnaire and a telephone interview. Until then the data were collected only via a telephone interview. The data collection method, also according to other studies, can influence the expressed opinion.
