Number of persons in employment in January 2017 lower than in December 2016
Compared to December 2016, in January 2017 the number of persons in employment decreased by around 1,800 or by 0.2% (to around 822,700). Compared to January 2016 the number of persons in employment increased by 3.1%. In January 2017, compared to the previous month, the number of men in employment decreased (by 0.4% to around 448,100), while the number of women in employment slightly increased to around 374,600.
In January 2017 the average age of persons in employment in the labour market was 42.5 years. Women were on average older than men, i.e. by half a year; their average age was 42.7 years. Compared to the same period ten years ago it was the other way around. The average age of persons in employment was 2.1 years lower; men in employment were on average 40.7 years old, i.e. 0.6 of a year older than women.
An overview by activities shows that the number of persons in employment increased in eight and decreased in twelve activities. The biggest increase was recorded in administrative and support service activities (by 1.4% to just over 36,700) and the biggest decrease in construction (by 2.6% to around 50,800). The average age of persons in employment in administrative and support service activities was 40.2 years, and in construction 1.9 years more. In both activities men outnumbered women.
